UNPINNING TERMINATION (UPT) THERAPY

The Cardialen unpinning termination (UPT) therapy delivers a sequence of low-energy electrical pulses designed to stop abnormally rapid heart rates. This low-energy therapy is being developed to mitigate the negative effects of current high-energy defibrillators by delivering lower energy, less debilitating treatment for patients with heart arrhythmias. 


THE REASON

UPT therapy is being developed to significantly reduce the negative effects of existing high-energy defibrillators.1

  • Prior attemps to treat Atrial Fibrillation (AF) through implantable defibrillators were successful, but painful shocks proved intolerable for many patients.1

  • Recent studies indicate that high-energy Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) therapies may lead to increased mortality compared to patients receiving fewer shocks or a low-energy therapy.2,3

Early feasibility study data suggest low-energy therapy may treat AF with less energy than typically required with conventional treatments.4.5
